Video: Keepers of the Coast

Learn how the Kitasoo/Xai'Xais, Heiltsuk, Nuxalk, and Wuikinuxv Nations are stewarding Canada's marine territories.

In March, 2010 the Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai’Xais, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv Nations formed the Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA). The goal of the partnership is to ensure that ecosystems return to a healthy balance, while respecting cultures, advancing peoples’ well-being, and enhancing economies. The Nations use a combination of traditional knowledge and science to inform marine plans that uphold indigenous laws and steward marine resources in a manner that sustains cultures and ensures intact ecosystems, healthy communities and local sustainable economies, now and into the future.

This film (37 minutes) explores the stewardship work of the Nations, the partnerships and collaborations that have been developed with scientists, environmental organizations and the Province of BC along the way. It also looks closely at the struggles CCIRA has faced in trying to have indigenous laws recognized and marine plans implemented.
